Siding
Expert Installers
While designed to weather the elements, a severe storm can lead to wind or hail damage on siding. It’s important for homeowners to be able to identify siding damage, so you can quickly restore your home’s privacy, safety, and comfort. If left untreated, water can seep in and cause larger problems.
A storm can inflict different types of damage on your home’s siding depending on the material. For example, wind or hail damage on vinyl siding can cause chipping or holes while aluminum or other metal sidings are more likely to experience dents.
Meanwhile, wood siding can be cracked and warped due to severe rainstorms. This could lead to mold and rot if the wood is untreated.
If you notice wind or hail damage on your siding that appears to be merely cosmetic, be mindful this could be a point for moisture damage beneath the siding. Some damage might also be difficult to spot from the ground (especially in a multi-story home).
Signs of Siding Damage
There are several common types of siding storm damage. If your home features vinyl or wood siding, be on the lookout for:
- Cracking: Splits or cracks typically run parallel to the siding, often between the valley and ridges of the panel.
- Chipping: A small piece of siding that has broken off, typically at or near the bottom of a siding panel ridge. That’s where the panel is unable to absorb impact.
- Peeling: If you notice paint peeling away from siding, this could be a sign of underlying moisture damage caused by a storm.
- Breaking and holes: During severe storms, wind or hail damage to the siding can cause holes or breaks. If your siding is broken or has holes in it, then it is no longer protecting your home from the elements and should be replaced as soon as possible to limit further damage.
Gutters
Any roofing and gutter company knows gutters are essential to your home. They drain water from your roof and direct it to places where it won’t cause any damage to your property. Well-maintained gutters lead to longer lasting roofing and fewer home repair costs.
When storms come, gutters help in minimizing or preventing rainwater from damaging your roof and drenching your home. Clogged or defective gutters, on the other hand, do nothing but add to the risks of storm damage to your home.
Moisture can damage a home. But gutters provide the proper drainage your exterior needs to prevent water buildup. When gutters are damaged, moisture issues can occur. After storms, don’t forget to assess your gutters. This is easy to do in tandem with your roof.
What to look for
As you observe the edges of your roof, look for areas of the gutters that are sagging or broken. You may notice seams that have become dislodged or screws that have come loose. Take notice of debris lodged within the gutters themselves, as this can also cause backups. Follow the same steps when checking downspouts.

Windows
Because your windows keep you safe from the outside elements, they are one of the most important features of your home. If your windows are shattered or broken during a storm, they need to be replaced or repaired immediately to restore your privacy, safety, and comfort. But not all window damage is easy to see, and if it goes undetected, it can cause bigger issues—like structural or foundational damage—down the road.
If you have recently experienced a bad storm, you may see your neighbors repairing or replacing their windows. An insurance adjuster may also be speaking to homeowners in the area.
It’s important for homeowners to be able to identify damage after an event. No matter what type of storm you have experienced, learn to spot signs of damage.

Roof Damage from Hail or Wind
You may have been in your home or business during a hail storm at some point. It sounds like someone is dropping rocks on your roof. Essentially, that is pretty close to what is happening. Some hail can be the size of small boulders (softball sized). Hail can cause shingles to dent or even leave craters in the shingles. Combined with high winds, shingles can be ripped off a home. You may have seen shingles around your property after a heavy hail or wind storm. This type of damage can not go unchecked. Missing shingles can lead to water seeping into your roof or even your home. Do your property a favor, fix small issues before they become larger issues.
Even without these obvious signs, you may have damage and not know it!
Most wind and hail damages cannot be seen from ground level and go undetected to the untrained eye. If your roof isn’t leaking right now, it may leak soon and you don’t want to take that risk.
